At Birch Copse we believe that a high-quality education in English will teach our children to read, write and speak fluently so they can communicate effectively with others. Reading lies at the heart of our curriculum at Birch Copse. We value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers. Through a wide-range of high-quality, challenging texts, we strive for our pupils to achieve a love of reading and gain knowledge of a diverse range of authors. We are also committed to cultivating independent thinkers who understand more about the world in which they live, through carefully selected, vocabulary-rich reading material.
We use a range of schemes banded by colour through which the children progress.
We understand the importance of parents and carers in supporting their children with their reading journey at home. We foster a successful home-school partnership, which enables parents and carers to understand how to enhance the skills taught in school and to strengthen their child’s appreciation and love of books.
We believe reading is key for academic success. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently and with confidence in any subject in their forthcoming education.
